Principal Pete became interested in teaching while working as a part-time Demonstrator in Chemistry at Melbourne University. He then taught Maths and Science in secondary schools for several years, and was Head of Curriculum at both McKinnon Secondary College and Melbourne Girls College. Although Peter took time off from teaching to work at the Australian Council for Educational Research as a Senior Research Officer, and at both the CSIRO and the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria (STAV) as an Education Officer, he missed the classroom and on each occasion returned to a school setting. He maintained his interest in science education by becoming President of the STAV and editor of its journal LabTalk for several years
After taking leave from his secondary school to become a parent helper at his eldest child’s primary school, Peter realised that he could have a bigger impact on education by shifting to a primary setting, and became Assistant Principal (and a full-time class teacher) at St Kilda PS before moving to PMPS as Principal in 2001.
After an undistinguished playing career that was ended by a major car accident, Peter has now umpired over 800 open age matches in the Southern Football Netball League, and was this year inducted into the SFNL’s inaugural Hall of Fame. He also umpires the Port Colts Juniors each winter Sunday.
